In Super Mario Odyssey it's possible to play as Mario's old friend, Yoshi. To do so first you need to finish the main storyline. Do this and you'll be taken to Mushroom Kingdom and see a very familiar castle.
Wander up to the castle and find the scarecrow sat around the edge of the moat. Spin the scarecrow and a staircase will appear. Climb up and over the castle and you'll see a Yoshi egg. Spin into the egg and then possess Yoshi to play as him.
